Westmeath Independent Hall of Fame

A very large attendance attended the Westmeath Independent Sports Star Awards dinner in the Shamrock Lodge hotel last Friday night. Clem Higginbotham, who received the Hall of Fame award, had his own very enthusiastic supporters present to witness the historic occasion. Their enthusiasm knew no bounds, they were the last to leave the dining room and repair to the bar where they danced to the lively music performed by Tullamore based band Toxic Twins.

Robbie Irwin was posing the questions and Clem was in no doubt as to whom is the greatest tennis player ever. “Roger Federer” replied Clem to much cheering. He left Robbie and the appreciative audience smiling as he stated that Roger is his favourite tennis player, the quality and array of his shots are way ahead of the great rivals Djokovic and Nadal. I’m sure Clem gave a wry smile and was pleased that Djokovic prevented Nadal from achieving his eighteenth title early Sunday morning.

Congratulations to Irish international rugby player, Michelle Claffey, on winning the overall sports star award, the first lady winner and much deserved.

Australian Open

Twenty one year old Naomi Osaka must now be considered the leading lady to dominate future grand slams after adding the Australian Open to her US Open Grand Slam title. Roger Federer fans will be pleased that Novak Djokovic prevented Rafal Nadal from achieving his eighteenth Grand Slam title but can it be long before either of them achieve another milestone in grand slam titles?
