Christmas Hamper Competition
Our mixed doubles senior Christmas hamper competition was completed Sunday 22nd and as usual a large number of competitors participated. It was the only competitive event during the past week, continuous monotonous rain was the only winner. However Sunday’s competition was played in bright low sunshine, sunglasses were a necessity for the majority of members and of course seasonal attire added to the festive occasion.
The competitors were organised into two groups with the winners from each competing in the A final. Joan Conway and Shadi Kalash were group 1 winners while Rose Costello and Martin O’ Rourke won group 2. The second, third and fourth placed couples were supposed to play in B, C and D finals. After playing their series of matches in the A final both teams were all square and in the spirit of the occasion decided to share the spoils. Gertie O’ Rourke and John Cooney overcame Mary O’ Neill and Marek Rose in the B final. The other duos decided not to compete but break open, taste and enjoy some seasonal savouries.
The last players to depart for the day enjoyed an array of carols played by Rose Costello on her accordion, some sang along while others enjoyed a dance or two.
