Membership
Membership fees for the new tennis year are due from 1st May. Forms and Programme of Events for the year are available in the clubhouse. Fobs will be disabled from 31st May in cases where membership has not been renewed.
Michael Creighton Memorial Cup
Athlone team 1 will play Mullingar this Wednesday and the winners will qualify for the final of this competition. Des Windsor Mc Glynn, Richard Frank, Derek Stenson and Tomasz Koza are the team members with Harry O’Rourke available to substitute if required.
Team 2 competitors, lead by captain Tim Clarke, had a 5-1 victory against Longford last Monday night. They won the four singles matches and won one of the doubles matches. Tim Clarke, Pawel Michalski, Rob Kearney and Jimmy Raleigh will be hoping to overcome the other Mullingar team in the semi final this week.
Summer Leagues
The ladies and men’s summer leagues will commence in early May. The registration form is now in the clubhouse and the closing date for signing up is May 7th. The tournaments committee will arrange the groups afterwards.
Annual Mixed Doubles
The annual mixed doubles starts on Monday 18th May. The entry form is now in the clubhouse and all interested in playing in this tournament should sign up before Thursday 14th. Last year’s winners were Olivia Sumner/Tim Clarke combination.
Social Tennis
Saul Gill and George Bodor were in scintillating form last Monday night and were worthy winners after a great night’s tennis. Luciano Molinari made his debut on the courts and the Brazilian plays a nice brand of consistent steady tennis. Welcome to the club.
Ladies tennis continues every Tuesday, last week only the rain hopped on the courts. Paula Dowling will be organising the events this week.
There was a good crowd of both men and ladies for Thursday night’s mixed doubles tennis. Played in favourable conditions, there were a number of close and exciting games played. After a long and competitive night, where some exquisite tennis was played, most prominent was the partnership of Ann Dooley and Thomas Kozak. Also showing prominently were Olivia Sumner and Ann Marie Donoghue.
Coaching
Clem Higginbotham will commence coaching lessons for junior members Saturday 9th May. The lessons begin at 10 for children under 8, at 11 for under 12 and at 12 o’ clock for over 12 years of age. His contact number is 0864022490.
Coaching for junior members continues every Tuesday and Friday. Every Tuesday at 5 o’ clock coaching is for children ages 10-12 and at 6 o’ clock for children ages 13 to 15. Friday coaching also starta at 5 o’ clock for children ages 5 to 9 and at 6 o’ clock for children 10 to 13. Derek Stenson is the coach and further details can be obtained at 0851080013.
He is also organising lessons for adults Wednesdays or Fridays for interested individuals.
