Athlone Senior Open

Our senior open will have 15 competitions this year catering for a wide class of players across the midlands. The ladies and men’s singles will cater for 4 classes, A, B, C and over 45’s. The ladies and men’s doubles will cater for class A and B. The mixed doubles will have players of ability A, B and C.

The official forms for these competitions are now in the clubhouse and the draw will be made July 3^rd at 6pm. Play commences on July 5^th with the finals on Sunday July 12^th the same day as the Wimbledon men’s final.

 

Midland Leagues       

The Midland Tennis Leagues will start in the week commencing 20^th July with players from the midlands able to play in six different divisions.

Members interested playing in these friendly competitive competitions should register their names on the form in the clubhouse.

Athlone has won division 2 four times. In 1993 the winning team members were Mary O’ Neill, Ann O’ Sullivan, Kay Delaney, Ailbie Conway, Martin Egan and Brendan Bacon. 

The 1999 winners were Lisa Brennan, Anne Dooley, Anna Walsh, Raymond Murphy, Clem Higginbotham and Dave Costello.

From 2000 the teams were reduced to four players and in 2004 the winning team was Lisa Brennan, Anna Walsh, Ger O’ Donoghue and Eugene Dooley. We last won in 2006, the team then was Lisa Brennan, Darina Doyle, Rob Kearney and Lucasz Mierzwa.

Senior Summer Leagues

The date for completion of the summer leagues has been extended until Thursday July 1^st with presentation of prizes that night. So far it seems that Paula Dowling, Anne Dooley and Sine Mac Farlane will be the winners of the ladies groups.

Pawel Michalski has won group A of the men’s league with no clear winner of the other groups. The results of the final few matches will determine the winners.

Social Tennis

Luciano Molinari and Dave Costello combined last Monday and played exceptionally well to outclass the opposition. It was a good night also for Ailbie Conway, a wily tennis player especially around the net.

The ladies were in action on all four courts during Tuesday night’s session. Ann O’ Sullivan and Stephane Kenny were very competitive winning many long rallies.

In the mixed doubles last Thursday Anne Dooley and Jan Groenendijk played as winning combination and were unbeaten after two hours of exciting enjoyable tennis.

 

Summer Camps

We have two summer camps this year, the first starting Monday 13^th July and the second starting Monday 27^th July. The camps start at 10am and continue until 1pm for five days. To book a place or more information contact Clem 0864022490.

 

Coaching

Clem Higginbotham continues coaching lessons for junior members every Saturday. The lessons begin at 10 for children under 8, at 11 for under 12 and at 12 o’ clock for over 12 years of age. His contact number is 0864022490.
