Junior Tennis Coaching and Competitions
Derek Stenson is organizing tennis lessons for junior members every Tuesday and Friday evenings. Now is the time to register your children to participate in this sport. He is also organizing competitions every Friday at 6pm for children under 12 and at 7pm for older children. Derek can be contacted at 0851080013.
Clem Higginbotham continues coaching lessons for junior members every Saturday. The lessons begin at 10 for children under 8, at 11 for under 12 and at 12 o’ clock for older children. His contact number is 0864022490.
Midland League Division 3
Athlone 2 played Templemore in the first semi-final last week and returned home with a 3-1 victory. Anne Dooley, Paula Dowling, Luciano Molinari and Tomasz Koza now have to await the winners of Athlone 1 and Birr Wilmer in the second semi-final. Athlone 1 overcame Roscrea last Wednesday, the winning team members were Orla Kinahan, Michele Culligan, Richard Frank and Des Windsor McGlynn. Here’s wishing for an all Athlone final.
Senior Club Championships
The ten finals of our senior club championships will be played this Sunday October 4th starting at 2pm. Pawel Michalski will contest the men’s final and will be against either Harry O’ Rourke or Sean Raftery, our sixteen and eighteen junior champions respectively. Last year’s ladies champion, Melanie Whyte, will be opposed by either Orla Kinahan or Paula Dowling.
The ladies doubles final will be contested by Jacinta Digby/Aoife Raleigh and Anne Dooley/Mary Jo O’ Farrell.
The men’s and mixed doubles as well as all the plate finalists will be decided this week.
Tullamore Open
Richard Frank and Des Windsor McGlynn combined to win the men’s doubles competition in Tullamore last Sunday. Paula Dowling and Tomasz Koza were unlucky in the mixed doubles.
Denis Johnston Memorial Cup
The Denis Johnston Memorial Cup competition will commence in October. Last year we had two teams competing with team 1 members winning the cup. The members were Kathryn Raleigh, Jacinta Digby, Tomasz Koza and Dave Costello. If members wish to compete in this competition they can now register their names on the form in the clubhouse.
Autumn Leagues
The ladies and men’s autumn leagues will be starting in October and promotion and relegation in each group make these leagues very competitive. Of course their conclusion also sees major movement on the pyramids. Closing date for entries is Sunday 4th October. The official form is now in the clubhouse.
